Categories // Barcelona, CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL PI

It was built 1319 and 1391 in the purest Gothic Catalan style which means a single nave with side chapels with almost no ornamentation.  As most of the gothic  buildings of the same time, this church gives us a sense of hight.

It suffered a fire in 1936 where some elements of the Neo-Gothic style were introduced on the original building. The stained glasses were restored after the Spanish Civil War by Josep Maria Jujol.

Categories // Barcelona, Barcelona Monuments and Places, COLUMNS OF THE TEMPLE OF AUGUSTO

Guarded by a medieval building, four temple columns bear witness to the magnificent origins of Barcelona in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. These columns are all that remains of the Temple of Augustus. They can be found at the end of Carrer Paradís in the Gothic Quarter. The uniform columns of the Temple of Augustus inside are 9 metres tall and comprise an imposing relic of one of the temples from Barcelona’s Forum which stood on a corner site at the rear. The temple was built in the 1st century BC and, as its name suggests, it was dedicated to the worship of Emperor Augustus. Plaça Reial

Categories // Barcelona, Barcelona Monuments and Places

This square was built to fill the space that many religious buildings had left in the city as a consequence of the confiscation of properties in 1835. It was designed by the architect Françesc Molina whose goal was to extol the Monarchy. There should be a statue of Ferdinand VII, but the project never came to fruition. So, instead, in that right spot stands the fountain os the Three Graces.

There are also two streetlamps designed by Gaudí, in his youth, which were put in place in 1879. This square is composed by uniform, noble buildings with porticoes. They used to be the home of the most important families in the city. The place shows an ambiguous character since it was designed to look luxurious, but somehow it became more bohemian that is translated in its nightlife.

Sants Festivity

Categories // Barcelona, Barcelona Festivals and Festivities, SANTS FESTIVITY

Some weeks after Gracia Festivity, it is the beginning of Sants Festivity. Although all fiesta mayors share many things in common, each one is different, because it is the reflection of the neighbourhood  which it represents. While Gracia's festival has some sort of hip, cosmopolitan edge, Sants´ celebration is a down-to-earth fiesta mayor that embodies the traditional spirit of popular parties. You've got the fun fair with rides and cotton candy; you can find a  discomobile with hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s; you've got traditional processions and religious acts in honour of the barrio's patron saint; you've got long tables with neighbours sitting together and eating and drinking until late in the night

It used to be the residence of the eccesiastical hierarchy from the 12th century. It has suffered many alterations through the years, such as the ones carried out in the 16th century to connect the building with the dean´s house.

This building is a complete mixture between Gothic, Renaissance, and Romeo and Juliet style that has still some remains of the ancient Roman wall. Besides, it keeps some modernist details from the 19th century, when the Lawyers´Association, set up its premises in the building.

Nowadays, l´Ardiaca is the home of the Municipal Archive.

CHURCH SANTS OF JUST I PASTOR

Categories // Barcelona, Barcelona Monuments and Places, CHURCH SANTS OF JUST I PASTOR

It is said to be the oldest church in Barcelona. What seems to be clear is that it stands in one of the most unknown beautiful spots within the gothic district. It was built over the rests of a Romanesque Church dedicated to the saints Just I Pastor in the year 1342. Although it is located in an old area where all the nobility lived at the time, this church is surprisingly austere.  It might be its simplicity what makes this building that charming.

Plaça del Rei

Categories // Barcelona, Barcelona Monuments and Places

Plaça del Rei is probably the best example of what the city was during the Middle Age. The main building in it, is the Royal Palace whose history goes back to the 11th century. This imposing construction was the residence of the Catalan counts between the 13th and the 15 th centuries.

Its appearance nowadays is the result of several alterations. So, although most of it looks Gothic style some Visigothic and Romanesque features can be identified, since it is the base of the building.

Sant Jaume Square

Categories // Barcelona, Barcelona Monuments and Places, SANT JAUME SQUARE

It used to be the place where we could find the ancient Roman Forum, the meeting place and stage for political debate.  And, nowadays, its main role is almost the same, since it is the location for the two political powers of the city: Barcelona City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

The City Hall is the most interesting building at the square. Its neoclassical façade hides the inside Gothic building. The Tour of the City Hall shows several rooms that are capable to testify the gothic past of the city and the building: Saló de Cent, Saló de Cròniques, the lobby and the staircase…
