In 1944, during a parade of gigantes y cabezudos, young men who wanted to participate in the same event staged a brawl. Since there was a vegetable stand nearby, they picked tomatoes and used them as a weapon. The police had to intervene to break up the fight, and forced those responsible to pay the damages incurred.

The following year the young people repeated the fight, only this time brought their own tomatoes from home. They were again dispersed by the police. After repeating this in subsequent years, the party was, albeit unofficially, established.

Sants Festivity

Categories // SANTS FESTIVITY, Barcelona Festivals and Festivities, Barcelona

Some weeks after Gracia Festivity, it is the beginning of Sants Festivity. Although all fiesta mayors share many things in common, each one is different, because it is the reflection of the neighbourhood  which it represents. While Gracia's festival has some sort of hip, cosmopolitan edge, Sants´ celebration is a down-to-earth fiesta mayor that embodies the traditional spirit of popular parties. You've got the fun fair with rides and cotton candy; you can find a  discomobile with hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s; you've got traditional processions and religious acts in honour of the barrio's patron saint; you've got long tables with neighbours sitting together and eating and drinking until late in the night
